creek2

There’s something waiting in the background
Watching with colorless, shiftless eyes
Haunting like an old mirror or a desert valley before dawn

In a house where children used to play, abandoned long ago
Bloody footprints lead to shattered things
My pale heart can’t embrace

We slip out the back door and skip smooth stones
From the river’s edge
Stories of rhythmic cities break static backdrops

It beckons from the second-story window
A pulse pulling me back to what I know
I try to return, but you make it seem a lifetime away

We run away to find what we once were
My bitter heart heals, and the pulse doesn’t beat as loud
As laughter screams out sorrow
